Welcome — I’m Yuko Sensei
はじめまして!Hello, and welcome.
My name is Yuko, and I’m the founder of Smile Nihongo Academy.
For more than 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching Japanese to students from around the world — first in college classrooms, and now through my online courses.
Over the years, I’ve met many thoughtful learners who truly love the Japanese language and culture. They study grammar carefully and spend years learning the language.
And yet many of them share the same frustration.
They can understand Japanese when they read or listen.
But when it’s time to speak, the words don’t come out.
If you have ever felt this way, please know that you are not alone.
Helping students move from understanding Japanese to actually speaking it has become the most meaningful part of my work as a teacher.
There Was Something I Couldn't Give My Students
For many years, I taught Japanese in college classrooms.
I loved working with my students, and my students worked hard. They studied grammar, learned vocabulary, and built a solid foundation in the language.
But over time, I began to notice something.
Even students who understood Japanese well often struggled when it was time to speak.
They knew the grammar.
They knew the words.
But when a real conversation began, many of them froze.
And this was not just a few students. I saw this pattern again and again over many years of teaching.
That’s when I realized something important.
Understanding Japanese and speaking Japanese are two different skills.
Speaking requires repetition — practicing the same patterns again and again until they feel natural.
In a classroom with many students and limited time, it was difficult to give everyone the amount of speaking practice they truly needed.
Even tutoring sessions can't provide the volume of repetition needed.
That realization eventually led me to create a different kind of learning environment — one where students can practice speaking patterns at their own pace.
That idea later became the foundation for my speaking program, Everyday Japanese Speaking.
What I Believe About Learning Japanese
Over the years, my teaching experience has shaped a simple belief about learning Japanese.
Grammar is important. But you don’t need to master complex grammar before you begin speaking.
Many learners wait until they feel “ready” to speak. They want to know more grammar, more vocabulary, and more expressions first.
But real communication doesn’t work that way.
Instead of trying to say everything you would say in your native language, focus on what you can say in Japanese at your current level.
Simple phrases can create a real connection.
Speaking is a skill that grows through repetition. When you practice useful patterns again and again, your mouth and your mind gradually begin to work together.
Confidence comes from practice — not from perfection.
And that is the approach I now share with students at Smile Nihongo Academy.
How I Help Students Today
Today, I teach through Smile Nihongo Academy, where students from around the world learn Japanese step by step in a supportive environment.
Many students begin with the Learning Pass, which gives access to my structured courses covering the foundations of Japanese grammar and everyday expressions.
These lessons help learners build the understanding they need to follow real conversations with confidence.
For students who are ready to focus on speaking, I created a special program called Everyday Japanese Speaking.
This program is designed to help you train your speaking “muscles” through guided repetition and practical phrase patterns, so you can respond naturally in everyday conversations.
Whether you are building your foundation or practicing how to speak, my goal is the same:
To help you feel comfortable using Japanese and experience the joy of connecting with people through the language.
I Would Be Honored to Guide You
Learning a language takes time, patience, and encouragement.
You don’t need to be perfect to begin speaking Japanese. You simply need the right guidance and a place where you can practice step by step.
If you would like to start building your confidence in Japanese, I would be honored to guide you.
You are warmly invited to explore the programs at Smile Nihongo Academy and choose the path that feels right for you.
I look forward to supporting you on your Japanese learning journey!
